It’s been seven years since Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore called it quits, but the actor still opens up about the challenges of their marriage. Recently, on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, Ashton shared an eye-opening story about his personal journey following their split. The 44-year-old star revealed that he embarked on a week-long retreat in the mountains shortly after their 2011 divorce. “Right after everything ended, I went to the mountains by myself. I headed to Big Sky, Montana, and decided to go without food or drink—just water and tea,” Ashton explained. This wasn’t just a casual getaway; it was a transformative experience.
Ashton wasn’t kidding when he said he went off the grid. “I left behind all my devices—my computers, my phone, everything. I was completely alone with nothing but a notepad, a pen, water, and tea for a full week. No distractions, no conversations, just me and my thoughts,” he continued. And if you think that sounds intense, wait till you hear the rest. Ashton admitted that by day two, he began hallucinating. “It was actually kind of amazing. I started doing tai chi with my own energy. It was like connecting with something deeper inside me,” he said with a laugh. This wasn’t just a physical challenge; it was a spiritual awakening.
During his time in solitude, Ashton did more than just meditate. He took the opportunity to reflect on his past relationships. “I wrote down every single relationship I’d ever had where I felt there might be unresolved feelings or grudges. Then, I wrote letters to those people and sent them all on the seventh day. It was almost like an AA exercise. I realized I may have caused some harm, so I wanted to clear the slate,” Ashton explained. For him, this wasn’t just about moving forward; it was about healing and finding peace. “It was such a spiritual experience. Honestly, it was pretty awesome,” he said, emphasizing the profound impact it had on him.

Ashton and Demi’s marriage began in September 2005 and lasted for seven years before they announced their separation in the fall of 2011. Two years after finalizing their divorce in 2013, Ashton found love again with Mila Kunis, his former co-star from That '70s Show. The couple now shares two beautiful children, daughter Wyatt Isabelle Kutcher, 3, and son Dimitri Portwood Kutcher, 1. Ashton’s journey since his divorce has been one of growth, reflection, and renewal.
This isn’t the first time Ashton has spoken candidly about his divorce from Demi. During a 2016 Airbnb Open event in LA, he revealed that he lived in Airbnbs for an entire year after their separation. “I went to Europe and arrived in the middle of the night. When I got to the Airbnb at 2:00 am, the host had left me dinner and a glass of wine. It was exactly the magic and love I needed in that moment. I was blown away by how much someone could care about a total stranger,” he recalled. These moments, big and small, have shaped Ashton into the person he is today.
