After the devastating school shooting in Parkland, Florida, the world watched in awe as the surviving students emerged with courage and grace. Their voices resonated globally, inspiring countless individuals, including Hollywood power couple George Clooney and his wife, Amal Clooney. The couple announced their support for the teens' mission to demand safer schools across America. On March 24, George and Amal plan to join the March for Our Lives rally, standing shoulder to shoulder with this remarkable generation. “Our family will be there on March 24,” George stated firmly, “to stand side by side with this incredible generation of young people.” To further back their commitment, the couple pledged a generous donation of $500,000 in the names of their eight-month-old twins, Ella and Alexander, to help fund the event.
Many celebrities engage in philanthropy, but George, 56, and Amal, 40, have made activism a cornerstone of their daily lives. Their efforts extend far beyond just writing checks; they are actively involved in uplifting those who need it most. Alongside their recent donation, the couple is also sponsoring Hazim Avdal, a 23-year-old Iraqi and member of the persecuted Yazidi religious minority. Hazim's life was uprooted when his village was attacked by ISIS, forcing him to flee. “We were all in New York with George and his parents, Nick and Nina, when Hazim spoke about his dream of one day studying in the US,” Amal recalls with emotion. “We all had the same thought, which was, maybe there’s something we can do to help with that.”
Giving back has always been a natural part of George and Amal's lives. George credits his father, a longtime television journalist, for instilling in him the importance of public service. “My father would get letters from people who had a really bad year,” George reminisces. “He’d pick one, and we’d buy presents for the kids. On Christmas morning, before we could open any of our presents, we’d drive to some strangers’ home and bring their kids gifts.” This early lesson in kindness left a lasting impression on George. “The altruistic activism that George lives by is definitely from his parents,” a family friend confides to Closer. It’s clear that George took his father’s teachings to heart and has carried them into his adult life.

When George and Amal first met, it was love at first sight. “I felt I met someone who I would absolutely trade my life for,” George says with sincerity. “I’d never had that experience before.” But their relationship wasn’t without its challenges. Early in their romance, George almost missed the mark by trying too hard to impress Amal. “I went to London to do the score of a movie at Abbey Road Studios,” he recalls. “You’ve got a 150-piece orchestra, and I thought, ‘If you’re ever going to impress somebody.’” However, George was quickly humbled by Amal’s dedication to her work. “Amal left this meeting where she was trying to hold the Muslim Brotherhood to account for something — and we are just doing a dumb movie score!”
Since then, George and Amal have worked together to uplift the lives of refugees like Hazim. “I remember being so struck by his courage but also just this amazing spirit,” Amal shares. “Even after everything he lost, he spoke about a desire for justice, not revenge.” While they can’t solve all the world’s problems, they are committed to making a tangible difference. “I’m able to do it because I can afford to do it,” George admits. “I feel like I hit the jackpot [in life], so you should spread some luck around.”
