Jerry Seinfeld’s Journey To Comedy: A Revealing Look At His Past And Present

But let’s rewind a bit. Before Jerry became a household name, he had some less glamorous gigs. He waited tables and sold light bulbs over the phone. Yeah, you read that right—light bulbs. Jerry joked about the challenges of finding people sitting in the dark, desperate for illumination. But at 27, his big break came when he appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in 1981. “I don’t wonder what it’s like to be an Olympic athlete,” he said, comparing the pressure of performing on the show to the fleeting nature of athletic competitions. “If Johnny Carson likes you, you’re in show business, and if he doesn’t, you’re not.” Lucky for Jerry, Johnny loved him.

With Johnny’s stamp of approval, Jerry went on to co-create the iconic sitcom Seinfeld alongside Larry David.
