Imagine this: the whole world is buzzing about your new relationship with Prince Harry, the man who's fifth in line to the British throne. Suddenly, the media is on your tail, and you’re looking for a place to escape the chaos. Who do you call? For Meghan Markle, it was her best friend, Jessica Mulroney. When the world learned about Meghan and Harry's relationship back in September 2016, Meghan leaned on Jessica—who not only acted as her unofficial stylist but also became her rock during those intense times. Jessica stepped up, offering her home as a safe haven for Meghan and Harry to escape the relentless paparazzi.
In her latest book, Harry: Life, Loss and Love, royal correspondent Katie Nicholl sheds light on the couple's early days. According to Nicholl, after the tabloids first broke the news of Harry and Meghan’s relationship, the couple was in Toronto. Naturally, they turned to Jessica and her husband, Ben Mulroney, for help. As Nicholl explains, the Mulroneys were among the few friends who knew about the romance from the start, and they didn’t hesitate to lend a hand.

As revealed in an excerpt published in Vanity Fair, the Mulroneys were more than happy to open their home to Meghan and Harry. They created a safe space where the couple could relax and enjoy some peace. Interestingly, Harry quickly became a favorite among the Mulroney kids—seven-year-old twins Brian and John, and four-year-old Isobel, who is rumored to be a flower girl at the royal wedding. One source shared with Nicholl how Harry arrived with a bag full of gifts and instantly won over the children. "He was brilliant with them," the source said. "I think what really swayed Meghan was how naturally good Harry was with the kids. It might have been the moment she truly fell for him." Talk about love blossoming under the right circumstances!
While holed up in the Mulroneys' home, Harry reportedly became captivated by stories of his late mother, Princess Diana. Ben Mulroney, the son of former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, shared an anecdote about how Princess Diana once stayed with his family during an official tour. Tired of the political discussions after dinner, she ventured up to the nursery to play with Ben and his siblings. "Harry found them immediately kind and welcoming," a friend of the couple told Nicholl. "He loved hearing stories about his mother. Jessica is one of the nicest, sweetest people you'll ever meet, and Ben is really easy to get along with." Could this be another hint that Jessica might serve as maid of honor at the royal wedding?
