Now, let me tell you a story about a chilly evening in London that turned out to be anything but cold. Kate Middleton, radiant and glowing, lit up the National Portrait Gallery with her presence. The Duchess of Cambridge, who's expecting her third child, didn’t let the freezing weather or her busy schedule dampen her spirits. Just hours before this event, she had been attending a Heads Together mental health initiative alongside Prince William, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle. Despite her hectic day, Kate was as fresh and vibrant as ever, dressed in a breathtaking floral dress by Orla Kiely on February 28th.
As a patron of the National Portrait Gallery since 2012, Kate has always had a special place in her heart for the arts. With her baby due in April, she still took the time to pen the forward for this special event. Drawing on her Art History background, she not only wrote an introduction but also provided insightful captions for the exhibition titled "Victorian Giants: The Birth of Art Photography." The works showcased by legendary artists like Oscar Rejlander, Lewis Carroll, Julia Margaret Cameron, and Lady Clementina Hawarden are a testament to her deep appreciation for the history of photography.

Kate, a devoted mother and an amateur photographer with a keen eye, shared her thoughts on the exhibit. She’s no stranger to photography, having captured memorable moments of her children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, numerous times. In her own words, she described herself as an "enthusiastic amateur photographer," which only adds to her charm and relatability.
Reflecting on her academic past, she said, "This period in the history of photography has always fascinated me. Back in my student days at the University of St. Andrews, I chose it as the subject of my undergraduate thesis. The photographs of children, which play a prominent role in this exhibition, have always held a special place in my heart."
Kate elaborated on her connection to the exhibition in her foreword, "These photographs allow us to reflect on the fleeting nature of childhood and its importance. Children occupied a unique space in the Victorian imagination, celebrated for their limitless potential. This concept resonates with me today, both in my official work and the charities I support, as well as in my role as a mother of a young family." Her words remind us of the universal value of cherishing childhood.
