When you think of Colin Firth, you might picture him as Mr. Darcy or Mark Darcy in some of your favorite films like Bridget Jones’s Diary or Mamma Mia!. But behind the scenes, there’s another side to this Golden Globe-winning actor that doesn’t always make headlines—his role as a devoted father. Let me tell you, Colin loves his three sons, Will Firth, Luca Firth, and Matteo Firth, more than anything. And even though he keeps his personal life pretty private, it’s clear that being a dad is what truly lights up his world.
Colin’s journey into fatherhood started way back in the late '80s when he met actress Meg Tilly on the set of Valmont. At the time, they weren’t just playing romantic leads in the film—they were falling in love off-screen too. After wrapping up the movie, Meg and Colin decided to move to Vancouver, where Colin stepped into a new role: stepdad to Meg’s two children, Emily and David, whom she shares with her ex-husband Tim Zinnemann. A year after settling down, Meg and Colin welcomed their first child together, Will Firth, in 1990.
Though Colin and Meg never officially tied the knot, their relationship was built on mutual respect and love—for each other and their family. By 1994, however, their romantic partnership came to an end. But here’s the thing: their bond didn’t stop there. Meg has nothing but good things to say about Colin, especially when it comes to his role as a father. In fact, she told People magazine in 2017 how much Colin means to her and her kids. “He’s showed up for graduations, births of babies—he’s a sweetheart,” she said. “When Will was in the house, he would stay with us, and when I go to England, we always have dinner and go out together. Colin’s presence is such a big part of our lives. If he weren’t around, there’d definitely be a hole.”

After his relationship with Meg, Colin found love once more with Livia Giuggioli. They met on the set of the BBC drama Nostromo in 1995, and Colin knew right away that something special was happening. “I was on the steps of a church in this ancient city, and I saw her coming through the crowd,” he once reminisced. “It was a bolt to the heart. I couldn’t move.”
Colin and Livia got married in 1997, and their union brought even more joy into Colin’s life with the arrival of two more sons: Luca Firth in 2001 and Matteo Firth in 2003. For over two decades, Colin and Livia shared a life filled with love and family. However, after 22 years together, they announced their separation in 2019. Despite their split, Colin remains committed to his role as a father. “Being a father is what makes life most worth living, no question,” he’s said. “Nothing takes precedence over my boys. We have to make sure that we spend enough time together.”
