Hey there, royal watchers! It’s only been a few days since Kate Middleton dropped the big news—she’s expecting her third child! And already, the world is buzzing with baby name predictions. People are so into it that they’re even placing bets on names like Prince Arthur, Princess Alice, Prince Albert, and Princess Victoria. But while we’re all speculating, let’s take a closer look at some of the most unlikely names for this royal baby and why Kate and William might steer clear of them.
First things first, let’s talk tradition. Kate and William, both 35 years young, are under immense pressure to pick a name that’s steeped in royal history. They’re not about to go off-script and choose trendy names like Isabella, Olivia, Emma, Ava, Noah, Oliver, Jack, or Charlie—no matter how popular they are in the UK right now. And as much as fans would love to see the name Diana for their third child, especially if it’s a girl, royal expert Ingrid Seward has weighed in with some interesting thoughts. She believes naming their child Diana as a first name could place “too much pressure” on the little one. “Naming your child after a parent who died in such a dramatic way might be a little bit unfair. For someone as iconic as Diana, it’s probably very difficult to try and recreate that—and you’re always going to be compared, which is unfair,” Seward explained. Of course, they did honor Diana by using her name as a middle name for Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.
Now, here’s a twist you might not have expected: the name John is surprisingly one of the most unlikely choices for a royal baby. Despite Prince George being named after another English monarch, King George, the name John has a complicated history. King John, who reigned from 1199 until his death in 1216, left such a negative mark on history that the name John is practically taboo in royal circles. According to journalist Mike Wright from The Telegraph, “He holds by far the strongest claim to being England’s worst-ever monarch. The name John was so debased by its only regal bearer that it’s highly doubtful it can ever be redeemed.” Who would’ve thought, right?

We’ve still got about six months until the new royal baby is expected to arrive—William accidentally let slip that Kate’s due date is March 2018! That gives the world plenty of time to speculate and predict what the name of George and Charlotte’s new sibling might be. We can’t wait to meet this little one next year and see which name they choose!
