Let me tell you a story about a true rock legend who faced one of life's toughest battles and came out victorious. Ronnie Wood, the iconic guitarist of The Rolling Stones, recently shared his harrowing experience with lung cancer. At 70 years old, Ronnie's journey is nothing short of inspiring, proving once again why he’s an icon both on and off the stage.
Ronnie opened up about his health scare during an interview with The Mail on Sunday’s Event Magazine. He revealed that the diagnosis came unexpectedly during a routine medical checkup with his doctor three months ago. Now, here’s the kicker—Ronnie had been smoking for most of his adult life, but he decided to quit just one week before the birth of his youngest children, twin daughters Gracie and Alice, back in 2016. His doctor wanted to conduct a more thorough examination of his lungs because of his smoking history, and that's when they uncovered the issue.

Ronnie was candid about his reaction to the diagnosis. “I said ‘go for it,’” he recalled. “And then the doctor came back with the news that I had this supernova burning away on my left lung. Honestly, I wasn’t shocked. I hadn’t had a chest X-ray since I went into Cottonwood, a rehab clinic in Tucson, Arizona, back in 2002. The doctor asked me what I wanted to do, and my response was simple: ‘Just get it out of me.’”
Ronnie was determined to tackle the cancer head-on, but he wasn’t keen on chemotherapy. He had one major fear—losing his hair. So, instead of jumping into chemo, he underwent a week of tests to ensure the cancer hadn’t spread. Once the results confirmed that the cancer was localized, Ronnie prepared for a five-hour surgery to remove the affected part of his lung.

Ronnie explained, “It’s more that I wasn’t going to lose my hair. This hair wasn’t going anywhere. A week later, the doctors came back with the good news that the cancer hadn’t spread, and I said, ‘Let’s get it out now.’ Just before I closed my eyes for the operation, I looked at the doctor and said, ‘Let battle commence.’”
Though Ronnie described that week as one of the darkest of his life, he credits his wife, Sally, for being his rock. “Sally was amazing,” he said with admiration. “It’s only since we’ve gotten through it that she’s been able to tell me how it was the worst seven days of her life. But she stood by me every step of the way.”
