Sandra’s mother, Vicky Svitak, became a teenage mom and struggled with addiction, leaving her unable to care for her five children. As the oldest sibling, Sandra stepped up to the plate. She took on the responsibility of feeding and caring for her younger siblings, relying on food stamps and welfare to make ends meet. This early experience taught her the value of resourcefulness and kindness, qualities she carries with her to this day.

    A Holiday Tradition Born Out of Necessity

    For Sandra, the holidays weren’t always about lavish meals or extravagant decorations. When she and her siblings moved in with their aunt and uncle, Sandra learned the art of making something out of nothing. She recalled preparing her very first Thanksgiving feast, sharing her memories with People. “I didn’t have any money, so Aunt Peggy, Uncle Bill, and I were in the kitchen together. I bought fancy paper plates and decorated the kitchen table with them. We made all sorts of candies and cookies, wrapped them up in cellophane, and delivered them to all my friends,” she reminisced. “Uncle Bill even taught me how to use a candy thermometer—it was all new to me back then!”

    Sandra’s story is a reminder that giving back doesn’t always require grand gestures. Sometimes, it’s the little things—like sharing homemade treats or lending a helping hand—that can make the biggest impact.
