Michael Douglas And Catherine Zeta-Jones: A Love Story That Keeps Getting Better

Picture this: Michael Douglas, the legendary actor known for his roles in Ant-Man and countless other blockbusters, beaming with pride as he presents his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, with an award named after his stepmother, Anne Douglas. It’s a heartwarming moment that speaks volumes about their relationship. At the LA Mission Legacy of Vision Gala in Beverly Hills on November 9, the 73-year-old star gushed to Closer about his admiration for Catherine. “I’m so proud of her,” he said, adding, “She never ceases to amaze me.”

And let’s not forget, the admiration goes both ways. Catherine, the Welsh-born beauty who has captivated audiences worldwide, celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary on November 18. In a touching tribute, she shared, “I thought it could never get better than that day, but it did.” Their love story proves that the best things in life keep getting better with time—and these two are living proof.

A Journey Through Challenges

Life hasn’t always been easy for this power couple. Michael battled stage 4 tongue cancer, while Catherine faced her own struggles with bipolar disorder. Despite these challenges—and even after a brief separation—they’ve emerged stronger than ever. They tied the knot in November 2000, but in May 2013, Catherine's rep confirmed that they were taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage. By November 2014, the couple had reconciled, and they’ve been living happily ever after with their children, son Dylan, 17, and daughter Carys, 14.

  • In a candid interview in 2016, Catherine opened up about that difficult period in their lives. “It’s a long road, and I think people today are so quick to throw in the towel on marriage,” she explained. “You have to give it your best shot and not give up when the first problem arises, because that won’t be the last problem. There will be many more down the road.”

The Early Days: A Meet-Cute to Remember

Who would’ve thought that their love story started with a bit of a rocky introduction? Back in August 1998 at the Deauville Film Festival in France, Michael made a bold move when he met Catherine. “You know, I’m going to be the father of your children,” he told her. Catherine’s response? “I’ve heard a lot about you and I’ve seen a lot about you, and I think it’s time that I said goodnight.”

Thankfully, they didn’t let that initial awkwardness get in the way. Over time, they grew closer, fell in love, and built a life together—one that continues to thrive today. As Catherine once beautifully put it, “With you in my life, every day could be a 12-hour fantastic party at the Plaza!”
