Okay, let me tell you something that sounds like it belongs on an episode of Saturday Night Live—but it’s 100% real. During the Monday, April 9 episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers, Seth revealed that his wife, Alexi Ashe, had just given birth to their second son. But here’s the twist: they didn’t make it to the hospital. Instead, baby Axel Strahl decided to make his grand entrance in the lobby of their apartment building. Can you imagine walking into your building and seeing THAT scene unfold?
According to Seth, the day started out as any other. He described Sunday as “totally normal,” enjoying brunch with his family and taking a leisurely walk in the park with Alexi. Later, while he was feeding their older son, Ashe Olsen (who’s now two), Seth got the news that things were about to get chaotic. His mother-in-law told him they needed to head to the hospital immediately because Alexi was having contractions. So, the whole crew—Seth, Alexi, the mother-in-law, and even their doula—hurried downstairs to grab an Uber. But before they could even step foot in the car, life took an unexpected turn.
Seth shared the hilarious—and slightly stressful—details during his opening monologue. “My wife just says, ‘I can’t get in the car. I’m going to have the baby right now. The baby is coming,’” he recounted. And just like that, they had no choice but to act fast. Seth joked that Alexi looked like “someone was trying to sneak a baby onto a plane.” They quickly undressed her, and within moments, the baby’s head was already out! Can you picture the scene? It’s like something out of a sitcom, but this was all happening in real life.

Luckily, help arrived shortly after baby Axel made his debut. Seth thanked both the New York Police Department and the New York Fire Department for stepping in to ensure everything went smoothly. “Everything was fine. It’s crazy, obviously,” he admitted. But Seth couldn’t resist adding a little humor to the story: “F–k the Uber driver who charged me!” While this birth story might sound dramatic, Seth admitted it wasn’t entirely surprising. His first son, Ashe Olsen, also came into the world under unconventional circumstances. Back in 2016, Seth revealed that Alexi almost gave birth in an Uber after her water broke two weeks early. Talk about a family tradition!

Seth also reflected on the wild ride leading up to Ashe Olsen’s birth. “I will say, to Tariq, he did an incredible job, he kept this cool so well. And it was hard to keep your cool because one, we wanted to get there in a hurry, and two, my wife was on her knees in the backseat, holding on to me, and screaming out an open window,” he recalled. Seth joked that Alexi’s screams drew quite the reaction from New Yorkers. “She would be screaming while we were stopped at stoplights, and people would just cross the street. My wife was screaming out the window, ‘I don’t like this!’ And I just feel like New Yorkers were walking by like, ‘It’s New York, nobody likes anything!’”
Congratulations to Seth, Alexi, and their growing family! Their stories remind us that sometimes life is unpredictable—and that’s what makes it so interesting.
