No parent should ever have to face the kind of heartbreak Jimmy Kimmel and his wife Molly McNearney experienced. When their youngest son, Billy, was born, they discovered he had a serious congenital heart condition called tetralogy of Fallot with pulmonary atresia. Just days after his birth, little Billy needed open-heart surgery. A few months later, he required a second follow-up procedure. Through these incredibly challenging times, both Jimmy and Molly found themselves holding back emotionally, unsure of what the future held for their baby.
In a candid interview with O, The Oprah Magazine, Jimmy revealed the deep secrets he and Molly kept from each other during this difficult period. "There were things we didn’t share with each other until after the second surgery," Jimmy explained. "The biggest one was that, I think subconsciously, we didn’t want to get too close to the baby because we didn’t know what was going to happen." He went on to say, "I don’t know if that’s right or wrong, or even common, but when I told her how I was feeling, Molly said, 'Oh, I’m so happy you said that because I was feeling the same way, but I didn’t want to express it.'" It’s a raw and honest admission that highlights the emotional toll of parenting a child with serious health issues.

Thankfully, Billy is now on the mend and doing much better. "He’s great," Jimmy told Oprah Winfrey during an interview. "He’ll need another surgery when he’s around six or seven years old, but for now, he’s doing fantastic." It’s a huge relief for Jimmy and Molly, who can now fully embrace their role as parents without the looming uncertainty that once held them back.
Back in February, Jimmy’s close friend Ellen DeGeneres surprised him with a heartfelt gesture in honor of Billy. She dedicated a hospital room at Children’s Hospital LA to Billy, naming it after him. Since Billy has already undergone multiple open-heart surgeries, he’s spent quite a bit of time there. "We called our friends at Children’s Hospital LA," Ellen announced on her show. "We have named one of the rooms on the Heart Institute floor in honor of Billy. That will forever be the Billy Kimmel room." It’s a sweet reminder of the love and support surrounding Billy and his family.
