Let’s talk about Burt Reynolds, the legendary actor who has been making headlines for a less-than-ideal interview moment. On Thursday, March 15, the Hollywood icon stopped by the Today show for a rare appearance. But things took an awkward turn when Burt made a comment that left Today co-host Hoda Kotb feeling, well, a little uncomfortable. Imagine being in Hoda’s shoes—sitting there, trying to keep the conversation smooth, and then getting hit with a comment about plastic surgery. Not exactly the vibe you’d hope for, right?
After a lengthy chat about his new film, The Last Movie Star, Burt decided to sign off with a zinger. As the cameras rolled, he told Hoda, “I’m so proud of you for not having your lips larger.” Oof. You could practically see the awkwardness settle in the room. Hoda, ever the professional, managed to respond with a simple “Okay, Burt,” while sporting a perplexed look. And just when you thought it couldn’t get any more awkward, Burt leaned in and kissed her hand. Talk about unexpected!

Fast forward to March 22, and Burt is now setting the record straight with USA Today. “It didn’t come out like that,” he admitted. “I don’t even know what I said, but people were really upset with me for supposedly hurting Hoda.” Burt went on to reveal that he actually apologized to Hoda after the fact. “I never intended to hurt her,” he clarified. “She’s absolutely fantastic at what she does, and her laugh? It’s just irresistible.” Aww, that’s sweet. But still, it’s hard not to cringe at the original comment.
During the interview, some fans couldn’t help but wonder about Burt’s overall well-being. Was this behavior a sign of something more serious? Thankfully, his manager put those worries to rest by telling People that Burt’s health is “perfect” after undergoing elective bypass surgery eight years ago. So, it seems like he’s doing just fine.
When Hoda steered the conversation toward Burt’s love life, things got even more interesting. “You’ve had an incredible career with so many great roles and loves,” she said. “But I’ve always wondered—when I think about the women in your life, who would you consider the love of your life?” Burt’s response? “You’re naughty, you really are. No matter what I say, I’m dead in the water.” Talk about dodging a question! Still, it’s hard not to appreciate the awkward charm.
“Well, she was seven when I fell in love with her, and she stayed seven for about 11 years,” Burt joked. “I would say Sally Field.” But wait—it gets better. In a follow-up interview with USA Today, Burt clarified his cryptic comment. “I didn’t say seven,” he insisted. “I said 37, I think.” Hmm… seems like there’s still some confusion there.
While reflecting on his storied career, Burt revealed who he’d want to play him in a future biopic. “George Clooney? Why not?” he quipped. “He’s not quite as good-looking as me, but he’s still got a lot going for him.” Classic Burt—always keeping it real and lighthearted. We couldn’t agree more!
