“One-Month Deadline Set by IHC for Iddat Case Appeal Decision”

On June 13, 2024, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) directed the Additional District and Sessions Court to decide on the appeals of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, in the Iddat case within one month. The IHC also instructed the sessions court to address their pleas for sentence suspension within 10 days.

The Iddat case pertains to a complaint filed by Khawar Maneka, Bushra Bibi’s ex-husband, alleging that their marriage was solemnized during her Iddat period, which is the waiting period a woman observes after divorce or the death of her husband. In February 2024, a trial court convicted Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi, sentencing them to seven years in prison and imposing a fine of Rs500,000 each.

Following the conviction, the couple filed appeals against their sentences. Initially, Judge Shahrukh Arjumand of the sessions court reserved the verdict on their appeals on May 23, 2024. However, due to concerns raised by Khawar Maneka regarding the judge’s impartiality, the IHC transferred the case to Additional Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka on June 3, 2024.

The IHC’s directive emphasizes the need for a prompt resolution of the appeals, aiming to address the legal challenges faced by Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi in the Iddat case.
